Chicago passes ordinance to increase minimum wage
There are about 400,000 minimum wage earners in Chicago who [will] be directly affected by the city’s new minimum wage ordinance ... The City’s Council approved a plan pushed by the Mayor that will see the city’s minimum wage hit $13 an hour by 2019. Beginning next year the wage will go up to $10 an hour from the current $8.25 an hour. It’s not entirely a done deal- the law could be challenged in court. But for now- many small business owners say the hike will only hurt them and Chicago’s economy, while other small businesses welcome the hike. Is there really a clear answer? Small business owners Elizabeth Colon, Illinois 2014 Small Business Person of the Year and President of Metaphrasis Language and Cultural Solutions, and Linda Maclachlan, CEO of YJT Solutions, offer their takes on the hike.
