With Ballot Measure 1 on its way to passing a minimum wage increase, a sick leave mandate for employers, and what supporters have characterized as protecting workers’ rights, supporters are celebrating ... Supporters say it’s about fairness and making the economy stronger.
Vered Mares has owned The Writer’s Block Bookstore and Cafe in Anchorage since 2018 and has fewer than 10 employees. She supports Ballot Measure 1, saying it’s all about paying employees a livable wage and not forcing them to work when they are sick.
“For me, my employees, they are my single greatest asset,” Mares said. “They are they are the lifeblood of this place. It’s why people come in here.” ...
Mares argues that increased wages and better benefits mean a larger workforce in Alaska and more money going back into the economy.
“It’s very short-sighted to think that the income needs to be suppressed to support the business,” Mares said. “Instead, you need to create a wider pool of customers who can actually patronize your business.” ...
