A petition shows over 450 signatures supporting this measure, many of those signers are Kansas City business owners. KCTV5 spoke with some Thursday about backing this measure.

Many businesses already pay their employees over the current minimum wage.

“I’ve always believed in paying people what they are worth,” said City Market Coffee Owner, Nikole Ammer.

In the River Market for 28 years, City Market Coffee has continued to grow. About 14 people are employed there.

In charge of the shop for 18 years, Ammer said customer service is important and you can’t do that without quality staff. “I focus really big on the energy and people being happy ..."

Ammer will be adding more employees soon as they are opening Murmuration Eatery & Cocktail Bar in the Fall, connected to their current coffee shop.

Across town in Brookside, Pamela DiCapo owns two shops. She’s had her baby boutique, Lauren Alexandra for 30 years and opened her lifestyle shop, jorjy five years ago just next door.

She said pay can make all the difference when finding employees. She’s currently hiring at both.

“It can be hard to find people that are genuinely interested and passionate about your business so I feel like when I do find somebody that is really good I wanna hope that they stay..." said jorjy and Lauren Alexandra Owner, Pamela DiCapo. ...
